An interview with … Elegance Bridal & Formal Occasion Make Up

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hi,  I’m Hayley 32, married and mummy to 2 little boys aged 3.5years and 11 months

What is your business?

I am a mobile make up artist covering Cheshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire and North Wales.  I do mainly Bridal parties but occasionally nights out and formal occasion make up! I often attend Bridal Fayres to promote my business.  I have done them recently in Chester, Crewe, Shrewsbury and Wrexham.
My business is Elegance Bridal & Formal Occasion Make Up – http://www.elegancemakeup.co.uk

What inspired you to start your business?

I have always had a creative flair and a love for make up! I had 3 bridal trials off other make up artist for my wedding and decided that I was better than all of them so I did my own. I then made a new friend with someone who happened to be getting married in the following 8 weeks. I happened to ask her who was doing her make up and she said she didn’t have anyone and she was worried about doing it herself. I gave her a trial and she loved it! I did her make up free of charge for her wedding and people asked me if I did it professionally. It got me thinking that maybe I should!

What sets your business apart from the rest?

I pride myself on using Max Factor bases. For some reason, they seem to suit every skin colour, every skin type and give an amazing finish on photographs! Perfect for weddings. I also think its great that the products I use are easily accessible to customers, should they want to buy the products themselves for future use! I cover a wide area, travelling within 1 hour of Crewe and provide a personal yet professional service.

What do you love best about your job?

I love having a blank canvas to work with, building it up to accentuate the customers best features. Many people don’t know how to apply make up and get the best out of their looks. I REALLY enjoy the reaction I get from customers when showing off the before and after shots of my work!

Have you ever had an unusual request from a bride?

Make up is VERY personal, and everyone wants to look amazing on their big day. I have had some interesting characters who love to break away from tradition with thick black eyeliner and bright red lips.  To be honest, it’s their big day so I have to work with their wishes

What is your best selling product/service?

Bridal, definitely. I have a very good eye for detail and love to create a shimmering effect on the cheekbones so that when the bride is looking away from the camera, she is glowing and the camera can still pick up the detail!

What advice can you offer brides planning their wedding?

Lots!! Get planning early. 18 months in the real world may seem a long way off, BUT not in the wedding world. I know some photographers who are booked up SOLID for at least 18 months! Also a lot of companies increase their prices yearly. The brides I have this year are paying last years prices so deals are there to be had for the early birds! Also June/July/August/Sept are the busiest months and as a make up artist I only do 1 wedding a day! There aren’t that many Saturdays over those months so can get ridiculously busy.
If you’re considering just having you (the bride) done by a MUA, bear in mind that your bridesmaids could look very different to you on your photographs depending on how good they are at applying their make up/what colours they use. For the sake of the photographs you are paying so much for, its worth an extra few pounds to get everyone looking the best they can be! Professional photographs have a tendency to show up everything!!
For those of you thinking of going au natural make up wise, don’t!! Even the prettiest of people need evening out and accentuating on their big day!
If money is short, maybe ask your bridesmaids to pay for their own make up to be done (or get them to buy their own shoes instead and then you can insist on paying for their make up to be done)
REMEMBER, it is YOUR wedding and you are going to look at your photographs for years to come. So, it’s really not up to them to decide whether they have make up done or not, as the Bride, it’s your decision!
Good Luck and Congratulations!
